Is Earning the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Certification for you?
I learned to dive and earned my PADI Open Water Diver Certification in 1995. I did what is known as a PADI Open Water Referral, taking my confined and classroom sessions from a dive shop in Boulder, Colorado and then I traveled to Roatan, Honduras to finish my course with the open water training dives. The PADI Instructors that were involved in my scuba training, both in Colorado and in Honduras, made a lasting and important impact on my life. When I learned to dive, a whole new spectacular, weightless, noisy, peaceful, exciting world opened up to me and if either of my PADI Instructors had left me with a negative experience I may never have gone on to have had the adventures I have. By 1998 I had earned both my PADI Divemaster and my PADI Open Water Instructor certifications. The patience and enthusiasm that my first PADI Instructors and subsequently those that followed are something I have always carried with me. As an Instructor myself, I have seen students go from fear to excitement and from having doubts to being confident and safe divers.
In 2007 I earned my PADI Course Director certification and now I teach the people who teach people to scuba dive! My career as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor and as a PADI Course Director has been memorable and rewarding. I have made wonderful friendships along the way and have had the privilege of teaching (and also learning from) several thousand students from all corners of the earth from the Arctic Circle to right in my own home state. As a PADI Professional you get to see people realize their goals and sometimes even lifelong dreams of learning to scuba dive and you will almost certainly be someone who they will always remember. You spend your work days on a dive boat and underwater, rather than in an office. Your job as a PADI Instructor can take you to the far corners of the world, Thailand, the Caribbean, Belize and the list goes on and on. As a PADI Pro you may work in dive shop, an aerospace lab, law enforcement or even a theatrical production, the options are wide and varied. So, the question is, “Is earning a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification for you?”
